Plants for cat lovers

If you think that you can’t let your inner plant parent shine because you’re sharing your home with a furry cat baby, you can try introducing one of these low maintenance, and budget friendly plants into your home. Friendly reminder that although these plants are non-toxic to your cat, it’s probably not great for your furry friend to be eating too many plants. So if you’re cat is constantly eating your plants, you may want to try to keep them in hanging pots to see if that helps.

Here are some of my favourite cat friendly plants that are easy to find at your local garden centre or nursery. For an extensive list on which plants are toxic to your cat or dog, visit: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/cats-plant-list

1. Living stones aka lithops
These adorable little succulents are very low maintenance. They are prone to root rot and don’t need watering in the fall/winter. In the summer, let it dry out completely before watering again. Although these little guys are non toxic to your cat, if your cat likes to play with your plants, this little guy may not take the being thrown around very well.

2. Watermelon peperomia
With a pattern that looks like little watermelons, the leaves on this plant couldn’t get any cuter

3. Polka dot plant
This pretty pink plant can typically be found for under 5 dollars and add a nice contrast against your other greens.

4. Haworthia
There are several varieties of Haworthias that are cat friendly. This adorable little succulents are super easy to maintain. Give it some nice indirect sunlight and water when the soil is completely dry.

5. Burros tail
One of my all time favourite plants. This one looks great in a hanging planter. The leaves on the stem can be a bit delicate and fall off easily so if you have a cat that likes to play with your plants, you may want to keep this on a higher shelf or in a hanging planter. Great news is that the trailing stems/leaves look great in a hanging planer.

6. Spider plants
The majority of my friend’s parents growing up had spider plants in their homes. These guys sprout off babies all the time so if you ask around, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a friend that can give you a cutting to grow your own spider baby.

7. Bamboo
You can stick a couple of bamboo plants in a vase of water or water with stones and just pretty much leave it.

8. Bromelaid
This thick leaf plant adds a bit of colour to your home when it blooms. It’s not as delicate as other florals so will survive a playful cat a little better.

9. Parlor palm

10. Prayer plant
This little plant opens during the day and closes at night, hence the name!

Well hopefully one of these plants will help satisfy the need for some more green in your home. Let me know in the comments if you have other favourite cat friendly plants that didn’t quite make my list of top 10 budget friendly and cat friendly plants.

Thanks for the information. I hope you will choose a different houseplant for your main photo, however, because it gives the impression that pothos plants are safe for cats. Or, you might superimpose a “NOT” sign — red circle with a slash — over the plant, to indicate it is unsafe.
Do you have suggestions for plants to use in a catio?
